Oggi Joan Osborne compie 52 anni. La cantautrice è nata l’8 luglio 1952 e nel corso della sua carriera ha inciso canzoni di genere rock, folk, country e blues. Uno dei suoi pezzi più famosi è proprio One of Us, pezzo che prende il titolo dal ritornello “What if God was one of us” ed è stato scritto da Eric Bazilian dei The Hooters.
Al centro del testo, la fede in Dio e l’invito all’ascoltatore a considerare come egli si rapporta con Dio. E’ stato pubblicato nel marzo 1995 come singolo dell’album Relish e proprio grazie al brano, la Osborne ha ottenuto una delle tante nomination ai Grammy del 1995, tra cui Best Female Pop Vocal Performanc. Non vinse ma l’anno seguente Prince interpretò una cover della canzone per il suo Emancipation. Fu nel 1996 che One of Us riuscì a scalare anche la Billboard Hot 100, arrivando al quarto gradino della chart.
Curiosità: Il telefilm Joan of Arcadia ha utilizzato, in entrambe le stagioni, proprio questa canzone come sigla di apertura con una versione registrata proprio dalla Osborne. In apertura post il video ufficiale, qui sotto testo e traduzione:
