Eccoci all’ultima puntata dedicata al 2004 in compagnia dei Mastodon, probabilmente il più grande gruppo metal uscito in questa decade.

Se per altri artisti è stato piuttosto semplice, ammetto che per i Mastodon è stato piuttosto complicato scegliere quale album inserire all’interno della nostra rubrica “So 00’s albums“: tutti e quattro i dischi che hanno realizzato dal 2002 ad oggi sono mezzi capolavori. Ho subito escluso “Remission” (2002), il debutto troppo sconosciuto per la rubrica e “Blood Mountain”, così mi son ritrovato a dover scegliere fra “Leviathan” e “Crack the Skye” (che abbiamo recensito). Alla fine ho optato per “Leviathan” perchè, nonostante “Crack the Skye” sia sicuramente fra le migliori cose di questo 2009, è forse ancora presto per capirne l’importanza.

“Leviathan” prosegue il discorso “sludge metal” (e quindi dei grandissimi Neurosis), aggiungendoci elementi progressive e un grande tocco personale. Menzione speciale per la bellissima copertina dell’album che ritrae le vicende di Moby Dick (tra l’altro il romanzo di Herman Melville è alla base del concept di “Leviathan”).
