Il 9 agosto 1963 nasceva Whitney Houston, a Newark, capoluogo della contea di Essex, nello stato del New Jersey.

La cantante, indimenticabile e indimenticata, è scomparsa lo scorso 11 febbraio 2012, in un albergo di Beverly Hills.

La sua voce, la sua intensità e la sua bellezza l’avevano già trasformata in icona e leggenda ancora prima che ci lasciasse. Dopo il salto, ripercorriamo insieme la sua carriera tra album e canzoni ormai già definite “classiche”:

Album di debutto della cantante, pubblicato il 14 febbraio 1985, giorno di San Valentino. Dopo un dato di vendite non esaltante, arrivò il successo l’anno seguente, nel 1986. Riuscì a vendere qualcosa come 25 milioni di copie nel mondo, solamente 13 negli Stati Uniti d’America, con altrettanti dischi di platino. Il 26 gennaio 2012 è stata pubblicato, per il 25esimo anniversario, Whitney Houston: The Deluxe Edition, con brani rimasterizzati, live, remix e video promozionali.

Questa volta ci aggiriamo intorno ai venti milioni di copie nel mondo: negli Usa ha venduto 9 milioni di copie, 9 dischi di platino. In Italia ha toccato quota un milione. Terzo album con un totale di dodici milioni di copie vendute nel mondo. Nella prima settimana ha esordito nella Billboard Top 200 alla numero 22, per poi arrivare alla quinta e infine alla terza posizione. Fu un buon successo ma di vendite inferiori ai due precedenti album della cantante. I singoli estratti sono stati sei: I’m Your Baby Tonight, All the Man That I Need, Miracle, My Name Is Not Susan, I Belong to You e We Didn’t Know

The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album (1992)

Pubblicato il 17 novembre 1992 è la celebre colonna sonora del film “Guardia del corpo”. Ci sono sei canzoni di Whitney Houston (su dodici). Ha venduto oltre 42 milioni di copie nel mondo, battendo qualsiasi record. Dopo la morte di Whitney, solo in America sono stati venduti altre 212.000 album. All’interno c’è il classico “I Will Always Love You”, cover del brano di Dolly Parton. Inizialmente non doveva essere questa la canzone, bensì ” “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted” di Jimmy Ruffin. Ma era già stata utilizzata per il film “Pomodori Verdi Fritti”, così decisero di scegliere un altro pezzo. Fu Kevin Costner a proporlo, valorizzando così le doti canore della Houston. Il singolo vendette 16 milioni di copie nel mondo, a cui aggiungere altre 872.000 copie solo negli Usa dopo la scomparsa della star.

Quarto “vero” album della cantante, pubblicato in studio e datato 1998. In Usa non è andato benissimo a livello di aspettative di vendite ma è comunque stato un successo, soprattutto in Europa. Ha venduto circa dieci milioni di copie nel mondo. Nei Grammy Award del 2000 ha avuto ben sette nomination nelle varie categorie. E’ stato ben accolto dalla critica che lo ha definito uno dei più bei lavori della Houston.
