Le parti “soliste” sono state cantate da Emma, Melanie C, Melanie B e Geri. Victoria comunicò con le ragazze attraverso il cellulare in merito alla creazione della canzone e quindi non poté registrare la sua parte solista.

Geri Halliwell, nella sua seconda autobiografia, ha raccontato l’intenzione della casa discografica di trasformare il sound di “Wannabe” in una versione R&B. Non furono d’accordo e quindi vietarono la trasformazione del pezzo.
C’è stata molta indecisione sul brano che doveva uscire come primo singolo. Se le ragazze optavano per “Wannabe”, la casa discografica era, invece, convinta che il brano giusto per presentarle al gruppo fosse “Say You’ll Be There”. Simon Fuller era d’accordo con la Virgin e lo comunicò alle ragazze. Geri Halliwell fu furiosa e si arrabbiò moltissimo. A quel punto, protestarono tutte insieme, insistendo. Wannabe doveva essere il primo estratto e la loro decisione non era sindacabile. Così fu.
La reazione della critica fu inizialmente molto negativa sulla canzone, bocciandola. Criticarono la canzone, la definirono assolutamente non adatta come singolo di debutto e fu addirittura descritta come “fastidiosa”. Per alcuni la band era divertente, per altri sembravano fuori luogo e quasi spaesate. Il magazine NME scelse la canzone come la peggiore del 1997. “Magicamente”, nel 2011, sempre “Wannabe” fu inserita in una classifica delle più belle canzoni del passato, alla numero 111.
Ha venduto 1.260.000 copie in Inghilterra.
Il 14 settembre 1996 arrivò al numero 1 della ” Eurochart Hot 100″ e vi rimase per nove settimane. Perse la posizione solo per lasciarla al secondo singolo delle Spice Girls, Say You’ll Be There
