Pink, Just Like a Pill alla numero uno della classifica inglese il 21 settembre 2002
Omaggio alla canzone estratta dall’album Missundaztood
E’ stato l’anno di Pink quello appena trascorso. Il suo “The Truth about love” ha venduto milioni e milioni di copie anche grazie alle due ballad bomba estratte “Try” e “Just give me a reason” in duetto con Nate Ruess dei Fun. Anche Billboard l’ha eletta Woman of The Year.
Ma oggi, 21 settembre, undici anni fa, veniva celebrato un altro importante traguardo per la cantante, che arrivava alla numero uno della classifica inglese con il singolo “Just like a pill“.
Era il 2002, la canzone era il terzo pezzo estratto dall’album Missundaztood. Fu scritta e prodotta da Dallas Austin e Pink.
La canzone è arrivata all’ottava posizione della Billboard Hot 100 raggiungendo anche la vetta, per la prima volta, anche in Inghilterra.
Nella canzone si parla di droga ed è un brano che sta molto a cuore e che Pink ha sentito molto da vicino, come racconta in un’intervista a MusicOHm:
“Questo è parte di ciò che sono, ma io ora non sono auto-distruttiva come ero solita essere. L’ho fatto, quindi non sono curioso a riguardo”
La critica, ai tempi, ha promosso pienamente la canzone. NME ha definito questa traccia come la più potente estratta da un album “killer” (per le hit inserite). Stylus Magazine ha evidenziato come le chitarre suonino in maniera molto più integrata e come la canzone complessiva funzioni molto meglio rispetto ai precedenti singoli estratti (“Don’t Let Me Get Me” e “Get the Party Started”)
Il video che accompagna la canzone è stato diretto da Francis Lawrence per la LaFace Records. Si vede anche un elefante ma è una scelta che Pink non ha apprezzato e che non vuole mai più ripetere:
“Questo povero elefante … un enorme elefante, è così carino, e ho potuto vedere quanto è stato doloroso farlo scendere sulle sue zampe e ginocchia, e ho detto, ‘Non possiamo farlo più? Penso che sia sufficiente. L’elefante ne ha avuto abbastanza ‘. E l’addestratore mi ha rassicurata ‘Oh ma gli piace, lo ama.’ E così gli ho risposto ‘E quando tu sei stato un elefante?’ … Non mi è piaciuto. Non voglio farlo di nuovo …. Non ci saranno più animali nei miei video”
